Everything passes through: motorway, railway and two airports

It is the easiest region in central Italy to reach.

Tuscany sits on the country's main north-south line, and it is crossed by the Autostrada del Sole, by the Milan to Rome railway and by the high-speed line. Getting there is never a problem: the problem, if anything, is moving around Florence in July.

By car and motorhome

The A1 crosses the region from north to south by way of Florence and Arezzo; the A11 links Florence to Lucca and the Versilia; the A12 runs along the coast from Genoa to Rosignano. Below Rosignano the motorway ends and the Aurelia variant begins, a free dual carriageway that reaches Grosseto and beyond.

For the coastal campsites you leave at Cecina, San Vincenzo, Follonica or Grosseto, and from there it is a few kilometres. You do not drive into the old centres: Florence, Siena, Lucca and Pisa all have a restricted traffic zone, and the cameras work.

By train

The Tyrrhenian line follows the coast and stops at almost every seaside town, even the small ones: many campsites are within walking distance, or a few minutes, of a station. The high-speed trains stop at Firenze Santa Maria Novella; from there Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Arezzo are reached on regional services.

By plane and by ship

The airports are Pisa and Florence; Pisa is the larger and has plenty of low-cost flights, and it is an hour from most of the coastal campsites. For Elba the ferries leave from Piombino and reach Portoferraio in an hour; in August they must be booked, above all with a motorhome.
